The UKCRF Network led a successful Clinical Research Facility Open Day to on International Clinical Trials Day, 20th May 2016. A record 20 facilities from around the UK opened their doors to the public, show-casing their work with a variety of posters, talks and hands-on experiments, and gave local residents and school children an opportunity to find out more about clinical research and how to get involved in research studies.

Southampton Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility

Southampton WTCRF linked with a local comprehensive school and 141 year 7 children participated in a variety of hands-on activities that focused the theme of the day “What I do affects my health. I can improve my health & I can help others”.

Activities offered to the children included, hand washing using UV gel and light boxes, using microscopes, infection prevention, measuring heart rate and observing a simulated bronchoscopy. Feedback was incredibly positive and included requests for a repeat visit.

Manchester Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility

The Manchester event was a great success, with a number of local college and university students passing through the Facility’s doors to discover more about clinical research and careers in Medical Science. Participant feedback indicated that all visitors found the event to be both very enjoyable and informative. The balance test and the bio impedance tests were particularly popular with the students, and the MRI scanner generated much interest throughout the day.

Liverpool CRF

Between 150-200 members of the public visited Liverpool CRF and took part in demonstrations, met scientists and research nurses and watched a drama performance by Liverpool Hope University Students demonstrating one of our research studies Penicillin.

Many of the manikins and demonstrations allowed visitors to interact and this made the day really enjoyable
